GUIDELINES: REPORT WRITING LENGTH: 300 words approximately TIME: 40 minutes MARKS: 20 CONTENT/STRUCTURE Heading At the top centre

e By-line EITHER By a Staff Reporter (only for newspaper reports) just below the headline to its right OR your full name in running hand (NO signatures) on the right, at the end for any other type of report. No designation necessary. DO NOT WRITE IN BOTH PLACES. Dateline - place, day, date on the left only for newspaper reports. You may start your report on this line or leave a line and start a new paragraph 1st Paragraph introduction: must contain all relevant information: who, what, when, where, how. 2nd Paragraph body: expand with details. You may use more paragraphs if necessary. 3rd Paragraph conclusion: future prospects/ action/ outlook, your views. IMPORTANT POINTS TO REMEMBER The given outline MUST be followed on ALL points marks are cut if you do not do so. Any added details must not deviate from or contradict the given outline. The reader one is writing for must be kept in mind. TYPES Newspaper reports, feature articles, police reports, testimonials, book reviews, film reviews. LANGUAGE Must be formal, precise, factual and functional. There must be no ornamentation; similes and metaphors may be used sparingly in the features article. No colloquial expressions or slang may be used. No contractions may be used.
