ROLL WITH IT
Nows the time to invest in a trolley, a multifunctional
piece of furniture that has perhaps surprisingly
stood the test of the 20th century. From its beginnings
as a way of transporting dishes between the public
and private rooms of Victorian-era homes, through
decades of cocktail hours and drinks parties, the
contemporary trolley is a storage solution, serving
station and occasional table in one perfect for the
small spaces and open-plan layouts of todays homes.

A D AY I N T H E L I F E
First thing in the morning, I make coffee and smoke a
cigarette. At the weekends Ill usually cook for friends well
have a leisurely meal at the table with the doors opened wide.
My perfect day at home would be spent at my kitchen table
looking out at the garden and listening to Classic FM.
I love to potter in the garden during the day and to watch
the sun set over it in the evening the house is partly west-
facing and the light here is beautiful.
The most used pieces of furniture in the cottage are my desk
and rocking chair, but my most treasured item is a music box
that [London-based artist] Raqib Shaw gave me. It was lled
with jasmine blossom when I received it. Its such a poetic gift.
My favourite artwork is a painting by South African artist
Irma Stern (one of her works was donated to raise money
for Nelson Mandelas legal fund in the 1950s).
Bedroom Situated in the eaves, this attic room is light and bright. The bed
is a simple raised platform covered in a throw from India. The side table is
from Bedell Coram, an antiques shop in Spitalelds, London
Bathroom The patterned tiles and stained glass window were in the cottage
when the homeowner moved in (Walls & Floors offer similar tile designs)

TATE MODERN HAS JUST OPENED the UKs biggest retrospective of work
by Alexander Calder, the 20th-century artist best known for inventing the mobile.
Performing Sculpture will display some of his most famous compositions, which
range from gurative portraits to abstract pieces inspired by the cosmos. Calder
once said: When everything goes right, a mobile is a piece of poetry that dances
with the joy of life and surprise! We agree. Until April 3 (tate.org.uk).
