Napoleon invaded Russia in 1812 but was forced to retreat after the Russians used scorched earth tactics, destroying resources, and the harsh winter decimated his army. After being exiled and escaping, Napoleon's final attempt to regain power ended in defeat at Waterloo in 1815. He died in exile on St. Helena in 1821.
