where it draws the energy to develop. it requires warm ocean waters usually 26.5°C to
be able to develop.
Every year the Philippines is hit by typhoons, all provinces have been visited by
typhoon at one time or another it is because our country is situated near the equator

“Some of the Powerful Typhoons that hit the Philippines”
Module 2
GUIDE CARD
Introduction
In recent years, the Philippines had been overwhelmed by powerful tropical
cyclones.
Who could forget the terrible flood brought by Tropical Storm Ondoy in 2009? Or
the people swept out to sea during Tropical Storm Sendong in 2011? Or the poor
community of New Bataan buried in mud spawned by Typhoon Pablo in 2012?
These Typhoons tested the resiliency of the Filipinos through the years and brought
a lot of changes in our daily lives.
Learning Objectives
• Learners should be able to identify and explain some powerful typhoons that hit
the Philippines. (S8ES-IId-19)

Activity No. 1 : Cyclone Model
Materials needed:
2 plastic bottles Glass of water Scotchtape
Procedure:
Pour the water in one of the bottles. Sealed the two bottles
together and shake them in a circular manner until the water
goes round inside the two bottles. Repeat the procedure. (Do it
faster than the first trial)

Answer the following questions:
a. What does the water inside look like after shaking the bottle?
_____________________________________________________________
b. What did you notice about the movements of water inside the bottle?
_____________________________________________________________
c. Describe your work on your first trial, compare it with your second trial.

Tropical cyclone can be classified into 4 categories based on the wind intensity.
Activity # 3. Speed Matters!
Instructions: The table shows the categories of TROPICAL CYCLONES. Study each category
and classify the items below.
DISCUSSION OF ACTIVITY
The term typhoon is used only in the northwest part of the Pacific Ocean and in
the northern part of the Atlantic Ocean, the equivalent term is Hurricane. Thus, a
hurricane on one side of the Pacific Ocean will be called a typhoon if it crosses into
the other side. In the Philippines, we use the same word for all categories of tropical
cyclones. We call it bagyo whether it is a tropical depression, a tropical storm or a
typhoon. Tropical Depression, tropical storm, typhoon, and supertyphoon are
categories of tropical cyclones. A tropical cyclone is a system of thunderstorms that
are moving around a center.
