“ WHY PHILIPPINES IS PRONE TO TYPHOONS ”
Module 1

GUIDE CARD
Introduction
Tropical Cyclones - is a rapid rotating storm originating over tropical oceans from
where it draws the energy to develop. it requires warm ocean waters usually 26.5°C to
be able to develop.

Every year the Philippines is hit by typhoons, all provinces have been visited by
typhoon at one time or another it is because our country is situated near the equator
and being surrounded by oceans where water becomes warmer and warmer and later
evaporates and form tropical cyclone.

Learning Objectives
Learners should be able to infer why Philippines is prone to typhoons. (S8ES-IId-19)

Direction: Choose the correct answer of the following
questions and write it on your notebook.

4. Typhoon Yoyong enters the PAR in the year 2003, it has an international name
“Imbudo”, it badly affected the Ilocos Region, Central Luzon and Bicol Region.

5. Typhons usually formed in the Antarctic ocean because the ocean water is warm.

DISCUSSION OF ACTIVITY

The term typhoon is used only in the northwest part of the Pacific Ocean and in
the northern part of the Atlantic Ocean, the equivalent term is Hurricane. Thus, a
hurricane on one side of the Pacific Ocean will be called a typhoon if it crosses into
the other side. In the Philippines, we use the same word for all categories of tropical
cyclones. We call it bagyo whether it is a tropical depression, a tropical storm or a
typhoon. Tropical Depression, tropical storm, typhoon, and supertyphoon are
categories of tropical cyclones. A tropical cyclone is a system of thunderstorms that
are moving around a center.
