Sandro Botticelli was born in the mid-1440s in Florence, Italy. He was influenced
by the revival of Greek and Roman ideas in Florence at the time, His work is about
color and feeling not much about human anatomy and body proportions, yet it
retains a decorative quality of the renaissance era. and not only serve religious
purposes was a headway for Western art. His famous work was the brith of Venus.

The birth of Venus — The theme of the Birth of Venus was taken from the writings of the ancient poet,
Homer. According to the traditional account, after Venus was born, she rode on a seashell and sea foam to
the island of Cythera. In the painting we see here, Venus is prominently depicted in the center, born out of
the foam as she rides to shore.Of obvious importance in this painting is the nudity of Venus. The depiction
of nude women was not something that was normally done in the Middle Ages, In painting Venus, Botticelli
painted a dark line around the contours of her body. This made it easier to see her bodily forms against the
background, and it also emphasized the color of her milky skin. The result of all of this is that Venus
almost looks like her flesh is made out of marble, underscoring the sculpturesque nature of her body.
La Primavera’
Also found in Florence’s Uffizi Gallery is ‘La Primavera’, also known as
‘Allegory of Spring’, a painting that Botticelli completed around 1482
(about four years before ‘The Birth of Venus’). The work shows a group of
mythological figures in a garden, including Venus, who stands at the
center of the composition. The garden’s lush greenery is an allegory for
the growth brought on by the spring season; in fact, the naturalistic scene
is so elaborate that there are hundreds of types of flowers and plants. The
history of the painting is not certainly known; it may have been
commissioned by one of the Medici family, but the certainty of its
commission is unknown. It draws from a number of classical and
Renaissance literary sources, including the works of the Ancient Roman
poet Ovid and, less certainly, Lucretius, and may also allude to a poem by
Poliziano, the Medici house poet who may have helped Botticelli devise the
La Pr i m a ve r a composition. Since 1919 the painting has been part of the collection of the
Uffizi Gallery in Florence, Italy.
Botticelli’s ‘Chart of Hell’ is one of the most powerful
visual representations of Dante’s Inferno ever made.
Botticelli’s work, done with pen and brush on vellum,
portrays the descent made by the poets Virgil and Dante
through what the latter called the “abysmal valley of
pain”. Dante envisioned hell as an abyss leading to the
center of the Earth. he imagined nine rings of hell, each
representing a different category of sin. The ‘Chart of
Ch a r t of He l l
Hell’ is an incredibly intricate drawing – it measures
just 32.5 by 47.5 centimeters – that brings Dante’s
narrative to life through imagery.the detail of this work
was insane.
