Al Serino: Introduction to Visual Arts

Visual arts is a term used to collectively describe all forms of art that are created with the use of sight.
This includes painting, sculpture, drawing, printmaking, photography, video, and digital media. Visual
arts require a high level of skill and concentration on both the artist's part and the viewer's part. Artists
may work in any discipline and at any time period during history without departing from their status as
visual artists.

As you might expect, there is an immense amount of information available on the topic of visual arts. It
is far too broad an area for one article or even blog post to encompass it all! That being said, here are
some suggestions offered by American artist Al Serino, on what topics you might want to explore further
if you’re looking into taking up visual arts as a hobby or career.

Defining Visual Arts

Defining visual arts is a difficult task as there are many different types of art in the world and they have
been created across many different cultures and time periods.

Some of the common forms of visual arts include painting, sculpture, drawing, photography, video, and
digital media. However, Al Serino will focus on what is considered to be “traditional” visual arts in this
article.

If you're new to a type of art or just want to understand what visual arts are all about, here are some
questions you may want to ask yourself:

-What are the elements that make up an artwork?

-How does your work fit into an established genre?

-Why does your work appeal to others?

-What kind of techniques do you use when creating your work?

The History of Visual Arts

Visual arts have existed since the beginnings of human civilization. Prehistoric cave paintings dating back
to 30,000-40,000 years ago are considered to be some of the earliest examples of art. The first known
sculptures were made by Neanderthals around 70,000 years ago and found in Europe. The oldest known
painting dates back to 35,500 years ago in a cave in Lascaux, France and is called the "Sleeping Lady".

There has been a tremendous amount of development in visual arts since these early days. In order for
artists to see their work as something that people will want, they have had to improve their skills at
sculpting and drawing so that their art can be seen by others. It was only after artists had developed an
understanding of depth, light and shadow that they could create works that had realistic effects and
textures on their surfaces.
Today there are many different types of visual arts that cover all different interests and tastes. These
include traditional mediums like painting or sculpture as well as emerging mediums like digital media or
video games. With so many options available it's easy to find inspiration anywhere!

What is Visual Arts?

First, it helps to know what exactly is considered as visual arts. The arts broadly refers to all forms of art
that are created with sight (i.e., painting, sculpture, drawing, printmaking, photography, video and
digital media).

Additionally, visual arts require a high level of skill and concentration on both the artist's part and the
viewer's part. Artists may work in any discipline and at any time period during history without departing
from their status as visual artists.

The term "visual art" has been used synonymously with "fine art," but this is inaccurate because not all
fine art requires visualization. Visualized art can be divided into two categories: representational and
abstract art.

It’s important to note that not every type of artwork requires the use of vision. For example, calligraphy
might be a form of visual artwork but it doesn't rely on sight; it relies on written words rather than vision
for its creation.

Art Styles
Art styles are a broad and diverse category of visual arts. They are often characterized by the means of
expression, the materials used, or the subject matter. There are many different art styles each with its
own unique characteristics. A few types of art styles that might interest you include abstract painting,
photography, and video.

Formal vs. Informal

The difference between formal and informal visual arts is that the former is meant to be presented to a
specific audience in a controlled setting, such as a gallery or an art museum. Informal art is typically
created without any intent of being seen by anyone else, but it may be exhibited at home or in an open-
air setting. For example, you might have your children draw with crayons during their playtime. The
drawings are not done with any intention of displaying them anywhere in particular, but they may still
provide creative insight into the artist's process.
Finding a Place to Learn
If you are interested in taking up visual arts as a hobby, there are plenty of places to learn. For example,
some museums offer beginner's classes such as figure drawing or painting classes. Art schools can teach
students a variety of skills, including painting and drawing. Some art schools even offer specific courses
on digital media or photography. Other options for learning include local libraries, public art galleries, or
the internet.

No matter where you decide to learn, it is important to find the right teacher for you and your level of
skill. If you’re just starting out with your art career and have a limited budget, this might be an area that
allows you to explore without too much financial commitment.
