The document describes an experiment where zinc granules are reacted with dilute hydrochloric or sulfuric acid. Hydrogen gas is produced and the flask gets hot. Zinc sulfate is formed and a displacement reaction occurs between the zinc and acid. Questions about the reaction and products are also provided.

Explain Activity 1.
3 Class 10 NCERT Science
Caution: This activity needs the teacher’s assistance. Handle the acid with care. Activity - Take a few zinc granules in a conical flask or a test tube. Add dilute hydrochloric acid or sulphuric acid to this. Do you observe anything happening around the zinc granules? Touch the conical flask or test tube. Is there any change in its temperature? Observation and Conclusion: Hydrogen gas is produced and the conical flask gets hot due to the action of dil. H2SO4. The presence of hydrogen gas can be observed in the form of bubbles accompanied by brisk effervescence. Zn(s) + H2SO4 (aq) → ZnSO4 (aq) + H2(g) ↑ (Zinc) (Sulphuric acid) (Zinc sulphate) (Hydrogen) After the above reaction, we can feel an increase in temperature in the flask. Questions based on activity 1.3 Class 10 Science 1. Name the gas that evolved when an acid reacts with a metal. Ans.- Hydrogen gas is evolved. 2. Give the names and formulas of any two acids. Ans.- Hydrochloric acid (HCl)and Sulphuric acid(H2SO4) 3. Which chemical reaction takes place when zinc reacts with sulphuric acid? Ans.- displacement reaction 4. Name the chemical substance that is formed during the reaction of zinc and sulphuric acid. Ans. – Zinc sulphate (ZnSO4) 5. What is the aim of activity 1.3 Class 10 Science? Ans. The aim of activity 1.3 is to know about the 'Displacement reaction'. MCQ What is the chemical formula of zinc sulphate formed in the reaction? a. ZnCO3 b. ZnSO3 c. ZnSO4 d. ZnS2O Which acid is used in this activity as a reactant with zinc? a. Nitric acid b. Sulphuric acid c. Hydrochloric acid d. Acetic acid What is the product of the reaction between zinc and hydrochloric acid? a. ZnCl2 b. Zn(OH)2 c. ZnCO3 d. ZnSO4 What is the name of reaction between zinc and sulphuric acid? a. Combination reaction b. Displacement reaction c. Decomposition reaction d. Double displacement reaction What is the correct balanced equation of chemical reaction in this activity? a. Zn(s) + H2SO4 (aq) → ZnSO4 (aq) + H2(g) ↑ b. 2Zn(s) + H2SO4 (aq) → 2ZnSO4 (aq) + H2(g) ↑ c. Zn(s) + H2SO4 (aq) → ZnSO4 (aq) + 2H2(g) ↑ d. Zn(s) + H2SO4 (aq) → 2ZnSO4 (aq) + H2(g) ↑
