Abbreviations:
st = stitch dec = decrease BLO = back loops only
ch = chain stitch inc = increase k = knit stitch
tr st = turning stitch MR = Magic Ring p = purl stitch
sc = single crochet FLO = front loops only e st = edge stitch

Instructions:
 The number in brackets at the end of each round is the total number of stitches in this
round.
 (…) * n - repeat the number of st indicated in the brackets ‘n’ times.

Choose the correct hook size according to the thickness of the yarn. You can choose any yarn
of your choice but make sure that the gauge or size of the clothes will depend on the thickness
of the yarn.

The raincoat and the hat are crocheted in semi-X stitches. Shift stitches are calculated precisely for this
technique. If you crochet the stitches with Yarn Overs, then you will need to determine the pieces
symmetry and the number of shift stitches and their location by yourself.

If you’re not sure if the clothes will fit your toy, make a chain of stitches and count how many
stitches you will need to cover the widest part of your toy’s body. In this pattern I chained 80
stitches. You can reduce or increase the chain so that it suits your requirements.

Use a stitch marker at the end of every row and round for your convenience.

Materials:
1. Yarn in blue color for the coat 330m/100gr (I used Alize Cotton Gold №17)
2. Yarn in red color for the hat 50m/150gr (I used Yarn Art Jeans №56).
3. Yarn in mustard color for the decorative band around the hat 100gr/330m (I’ve used Alize Cotton
Gold №02).
4. Crochet Hook 2mm.
5. Scissors.
6. Tapestry needle for sewing.
7. Buttons or hooks to fasten on the coat.

So, let’s get started!

Cut and weave in the end of the thread.

Decorative band around the hat:

With mustard yarn.
The number of stitches of the chain depends of how tight you crochet. I made 63 ch. Fit the chain around
the hat and close the circle making sure it doesn’t twist. Sew it around at round 22.

Coat:
The coat will be crocheted in one piece with turning rows. Make a turning stitch at the end of every row.
The sleeves will be crocheted separately.

THE MAIN PART OF THE COAT

Chain of 81 stitches.
1-13. from the 2nd stitch on the hook: 80 sc, ch 1 (turning chain in (80) 13 rows
each row)
14. from the 2nd stitch on the hook: 77 sc, dec, ch 1 (78)
15-19. 78 sc, ch 1 (78) 5 rows
20. from the 2nd stitch on the hook: 75 sc, dec, ch 1 (76)

27. from the 2nd stitch on the hook: 67 sc, dec, ch 1 (68)
28. from the 2nd stitch on the hook: 65 sc, dec, ch 1 (66)
29. from the 2nd stitch on the hook: 63 sc, dec, ch 1 (64)
Now we’ll make the holes for the sleeves:
31. from the 2nd stitch on the hook: 9 sc, 14 ch, 17 sc, 14 ch, 8 sc, (62)
dec, ch 1

In the next row we we’ll crochet into the chains of the previous row:

32. from the 2nd stitch on the hook: 59 sc, dec, ch 1 (60)
33. from the 2nd stitch on the hook: 57 sc, dec, ch 1 (58)
34. from the 2nd stitch on the hook: 55 sc, dec, ch 1 (56)
35. from the 2nd stitch on the hook: 53 sc, dec, ch 1, (pic. 7,8) (54)
36. from the 2nd stitch on the hook: 51 sc, dec, ch 1 (52)

Next we’re going to crocheting the hood of the coat. Just

continue crocheting in turning rows.

37. (3 sc, inc)*16 (64)
38-50. 64 sc, ch 1 (64) 13 rows
51. 22 sc, (1 sc, dec)*7, 21 sc (57)
52-53. 57 sc, ch 1 (57) 2 rows
54. 21 sc, (1 sc, dec)*5, 21 sc (52)
55-56. 52 sc, ch 1 (54) 2 rows
57. 20 sc, (1 sc, dec)*4, 20 sc (48)
58-59. 48 sc, ch 1 (48) 2 rows
60. 18 sc, (1 sc, dec)*4, 18 sc, (pic.9) (44)

Pic. 9

We’ve finished the main piece of the coat.

Fold the two sides of hood together and
crochet through both sides with 22 sc (pic.10).
Cut the thread and weave in the ends.
Crochet around the edge of the whole coat
with one row of sc.

Pic. 10

SLEEVES
Now we’ll be starting with the sleeves. We need to join the thread to the 1st hole (sc of the opening of the
sleeve) and crochet it along using sc (pic. 11). The quantity of stitches can be different. I have 32 sc
instead of 28, because I make 2 inc in the corner to make the sleeve wider. It will allow the sleeve to fit
more easily.

Pic. 11

This will count as the 1st round of the sleeve. You’ll need to crochet 16 rounds, or you can adjust the
number of rows by adding or leaving out rows, to fit your toy’s body. You could also fold the edges of
the sleeves upwards to make cuffs. Just make sure that there are no visible treads.

POCKETS AND FLAPS

I’ve made two pockets with flaps to give the coat a more realistic look.
Pockets, make 2 pieces (pic.12).
Chain 12.

1. from the 2nd st on the hook: 11 (11)

sc, ch 1
2-7. 11 sc, ch 1 (11) 6 rows

Don’t cut the thread. Crochet along three of the pocket’s edges
and come back to the side where you started. Leave a long tail for
sewing.

(with crocheting along the edge)

Pocket’s flap, make 2 pieces.

Chain 12.
1. from the 2nd st on the hook:11 sc, ch 1 (11)
2-4. 11 sc, ch 1 (11) 3 rows

(without crocheting along the edge) (with crocheting along the edge)

Also crochet along the edge of the flaps and leave a long tail of thread for sewing.

On the pics below you could see where I placed the pockets (pic. 15, 16) with theirs flaps.

Use pins to keep the parts of the pockets in the

right position. If you notice that they are not
straight you can correct the tension of the
pockets by using the pins.
Sew the pockets onto the coat with the same
yarn you used to crochet it. Use a tapestry
needle with a smooth edge. I make small
stitches and make the tension of the stitches
really tight to make the stitches invisible.

-9-
Sew the flap onto the coat, 1-2 rows higher
than the pocket.
You are welcome to change the placement
as you prefer.

After you finished the pockets you’ll need to

decide how you will fasten your coat. You
can use buttons, hooks or any method of your
choice.

I used small plastic clip-on fasteners, 5 mm, and hooks as well.

Make sure to fit the buttons or hooks on both sides of the opening of the coat so that the coat will fit your
toy perfectly!

You can use your imagination and fasten your coat like you please! On the pics below (pic. 17, 18) you
can see how I did it.

(outer (left) side of the coat ) (inner (right) side of the coat)

That’s it! I hope you enjoy dressing your Paddington as much as I enjoyed designing the coat and hat to
dress him!
