Grade Two Art and Craft Notes

Forms--- A form is an object with 3 dimensions such as height,width and depth. Examples of
forms are trees,balls, animals,cars, people and books.
Materials used in drawing forms are:pencils,rulers,colours,erasers.
Guide Learners to draw any simple form from the environment e.g house,tree or a book

Texture is the smoothness and roughness of a surface. We use our hands and skin to identify
texture.
Learners to identify textures in their in their immediate environment by touching things like
books,desks,walls,trees and bags.
We identify texture by touching and feeling objects.
The materials used in creating textures are pencils,crayons and textured surface.
How to create textures
Place a paper on a surface. Use the pencils to rub the pieced of paper as it it rests on a different
surface.

CLet Learners say whether this surfaces are smooth or rough.

Painting shapes from observation.


Painting is the act of applying colour on a surface like papers using a brush or a sponge to create
a drawing.
Materials used in painting are:
Brushes,sponges, feathers,coloured paints, sample shapes,old newspapers or magazines.
Painting organic and geometric shapes
Organic shapes have no specific shapes and are associated with things in the environment like
plants and animals.
Geometric shapes have specific and perfect shopes. They are things like circles,ovals, triangles
and rectangles.
Let Learners draw and colour our national flag.guide them to use colours to paint the colours of
the flag.

Pattern making
What is pattern making? Pattern making is the art of repeating shapes,lines numbers or letters to
create an idea
Types of patterns that we’re going to learn in grade two are;
• Texture pattern
• Shape pattern
• Letter pattern

Texture pattern
Texture is the smoothness or roughness of an object.
• Let Learners touch different objects in class and say whether they are rough or smooth.
• Create different texture patterns by placing papers on the objects and using a pencil to rub
on the paper.

Shape pattern
The shapes include circles, squares, rectangles,ovals,stars and triangles.These are shapes to be
used in creating patterns.
Learners to create patterns by placing papers on various shapes then use pencils to rub or crayons
if coloured shapes are needed.
Create patterns by repeating shapes.

Letter patterns
These are patterns created using the letters of the alphabet.
Let Learners name the letters that they know and try to write them repeatedly to create patterns.
Letter patterns are important to Learners as it develops Learners handwriting.

Collage
What is collage? Collage is a picture making method where more than one type of material is
posted on to a surface.
The materoin collage are pasted in big sizesnot as small as the mosaic pieces.The material should
overlap leaving no spaces.
Materials used in collage can be seeds , newspaper pieces, magazines pages,grass,sticks,
coloured papers or clothes.

Creating a newspaper collage picture


Materials needed.
• Manilla Paper, newspapers, magazines pages, glue and adhesives.
Procedure:
1. Draw your collage idea on a stiff paper or on the Manilla paper or a cardboard.
2. Plan on how the materials will be stuck on the paper.
3. Apply glue on the paper material then stick them.
4. Leave it to dry.

Decorating egg shells.


Materials needed.
Egg shells,paints,brush,cotton wool and masking tape
Procedure
1. Bring a broken egg shell to school
2. Wash the inside of the egg shell under a tap
3. Let it dry
4. Fill it with cotton wool then seal the open top using a masking tape
5. Design a pattern and decorate the egg shell by painting it.

Decorating plastic containers
Activity 1
1. Bring different coloured papers to school and recycled plastic containers
2. Cut the papers into different shapes and sizes.Use a pair of scissors
3. Apply adhesives and paste then paint other parts of the container
4. Leave it to dry
5. Look at the ideas below

Activity 2

Materials needed:
Plastic containers,paints,brush,water and sponge
Collect and prepare them before the lesson.

Procedure:
1. Bring an empty 1 kilogram or a half a kilogram margarine or ice cream container to
school.
2. Using a sponge,paint the plastic container creating different styles on it
3. Let them dry
4. Display your decorated container

Ornaments
What is an ornament?
• An ornament is a decorative object worn to make a person look more beautiful. Example
of ornaments are necklaces,Bangles, bracelets,anklets and rings.
• The table below shows examples of different ornaments and the places worn.

Making a double strand necklace using found beads.


Materials needed:
Beads from the local environment,two strings and stoppers.
Collect and prepare them a day before the lesson.
Procedure
1. Tie one end of the string to prevent the beads from slipping off.
2. Pass the two strings into the beads .Mix different colours of beads to make your necklace
beautiful.
3. Tie the ends of the strings after fixing the stoppers.
4. Wear the necklace for the day then display it in class for decoration and assessment.

Double strand bracelets


Making paper beads for bracelets.
Materials needed.
Four pages of a colourful magazine,ruler,glue and pencil.
Procedure:
1. Follow the steps below to cut and make paper beads from magazine pages
a) Measure,mark and draw squares of 2cm sides each.Divide the lines diagonally.
b) Cut out the 2 cm squares at least 10 pieces then cut along the diagonal lines.
c) Roll the pieces on to a tooth pick,glue the tips and fold the pieces of paper starting
from the wide end.
d) Remove the stick. Your beads are ready for stringing.
2. A double strand bracelet
Wear the bracelet for the day then display it in class for decoration and assessment.

Printing on fabric with cut-out stamps.
Making simple cut- out stamps
• Bring a avocado seed and a toothpick to school.
• The teacher will assist you to cut the avocado seed into halves.
• Draw some designs you would cut out on avocado seeds.
• On one of the avocado seed,draw one of the designs you have made. Carefully use the
toothpick to scratch the shape of the design deep into the avocado seed.
• Cut out leaving the design raised from the surface.
• Using any colour of your choice, apply paint on the avocado seed then stamp it on paper
and fabric to make a print.

Sample
Apply paint on the cut-out stamps. Use red and green paints.
Print on Manilla papers using the avocado seed stamps.

Modelling
Slab technique.
UModelling involves making items with soft materials such as clay, plasticine or dough.
Materials needed:
Clay or plasticine,bottles, rolling pins,water,water containers and toothpicks.
Procedure:
1. Place a lump of clay or plasticine on a flat surface.
2. Roll the clay or plasticine flat using a rolling pin or bottle to make a flat slab
3. Measure and cutthe slab into five equal square or rectangular pieces.
4. Mix some clay with water in a container to make it watery, also called slip.
5. Join the slabs using slipto make a container.
