Town Planning Report 1

The construction of an underpass on National Highway 8 near Delhi is causing significant traffic issues. A 10-meter uneven stretch of road caused by the construction is causing cars to slow down, resulting in over 6km of traffic backups during peak hours. With 14 lanes of the highway closed for construction, the already busy 3.5 lakh vehicle route is experiencing worse delays. To solve this, the document recommends that the NHAI and traffic police coordinate to enforce traffic rules like lane discipline and speed limits, and for the NHAI to expedite construction work so lanes can reopen.

TOWN PLANNING

REPORT 1
PROBLEM: TRAFFIC ON NH 8 DUE TO CONSTRUCTION OF UNDERPASS

Location: Delhi-Gurgaon highway

According to estimates, National Highway 8 is the busiest highway in the subcontinent, as it

connects the national capital Delhi to the financial capital Mumbai, as well as important cities
Gurgaon, Jaipur, Ajmer, Udaipur, Ahmedabad, Vadodara and Surat

The construction of an underpass on National Highway-8 near Mahipalpur in south Delhi is causing
traffic that extends to several kilometres on the busy Delhi-Gurugram Expressway, especially during
morning and evening peak hours. The root of the problem is a 10-metre uneven patch, caused by
the construction of the underpass. The approximately 700-metre underpass is being constructed
near the Sashastra Seema BAL (SSB) office to link the Delhi airport with Vasant Kunj. Because of this
uneven stretch, high-speed traffic from Gurugram, Dwarka and Dhaula Kuan gets stuck near the SSB
office in Mahipalpur, with long tailbacks as a cascading effect. Motorists commuting between Delhi
and Gurugram have to negotiate heavy traffic every day.

According to commuters, vehicles from Gurugram and Dwarka have to slow down because of the
bumps on the road, which causes an over 6-km tailback till Rajokri flyover during peak hours. Similar
is the situation on the other carriageway (Delhi-Gurugram side) with more than a kilometre-long
tailback till Shankar Vihar on NH-8.

With the help of the NH-8, they can bypass crowded areas and make use of the massive 36 lane
route to get to their destination as quickly and smoothly as possible. However travelling by this
route is creating a problem as 14 lanes of the National Highway are closed. The route sees about 3.5
lakh vehicles on a daily basis.

More recently, commuters going from Delhi to Gurgaon were stuck in traffic for five hours during
rush hour after barricades blocked three exits on the expressway to “prevent driving on the wrong
side.”
Due to this traffic and construction on highway even the attached routes get blocked like
Mahipalpur, Samalkha, Link road etc.

Also major reason of traffic in front of ambience mall is cab stop these days where they stop for their
card renewal for toll.

SOLUTION: NHAI AND TRAFFIC POLICE TO WORK TOGETHER TO MAINTAIN TRAFFIC RULES

Once when the highway was blocked for five to six hours commuters blamed traffic police and traffic
police blamed NHAI (according to sources). If NHAI and traffic police works together traffic could be
controlled and reduced.

Lane Driving: Commuters should follow lane driving for the easy flow of traffic and to avoid
accidents. Heavy carriers and cars to have separate lane and two-wheelers to have separate.

Speed Control: Commuters should follow the speed limit especially two wheelers and trucks.

Also NHAI should try to complete construction process as soon as possible so that closed lanes
reopens and traffic is reduced to minimum.
