past, but of the contemporary life and society of
others
Positive force for natural and cultural
conservation
Can capture the economic characteristics of the
heritage and harness these for conservation by
generating funding, educating the community
and influencing policy
TOURISM AND CULTURAL
HERITAGE
An essential part of many national and
regional economies and can be an important
factor in development when managed
successfully
Natural and cultural heritage, diversities
and living cultures are major tourism
attractions
Excessive or poorly managed tourism and
tourism related development can threaten
their physical nature, integrity and
significant characteristics
TOURISM AND CULTURAL
HERITAGE
The ecological setting, culture and
lifestyles of host communities may also be
degraded, along with the visitor’s
experience of the place.
Tourism should bring benefits to host
communities and provide an important
means and motivation for them to care
for and maintain their heritage and
cultural practices.
TOURISM AND CULTURAL
HERITAGE
The involvement and cooperation of local
or indigenous community representatives,
conservationist, tourism operators,
property owners, policy makers, those
preparing national development plans
and site managers is necessary to achieve
a sustainable tourism industry and
enhance the protection of heritage
resources for future generations.
What is CULTURAL TOURISM?
Cultural Tourism has been
defined as: The movement of
persons to cultural attractions
away from their normal place of
residence, with the intention to
gather new information and
experiences to satisfy their
cultural needs.
Concerned with a country or region’s culture.
Includes tourism in in urban areas,
particularly historic or large cities and their
cultural facilities such as museums and
theaters.
Also include tourism in rural areas
showcasing the traditions of indigenous
cultural communities like festivals, rituals,
values and lifestyle or way of life.
Cultural tourists spend substantially
more than standard tourists do.
This form of tourism is also
becoming generally more popular
throughout the world.
It can play in regional development
in different world regions.
Preparing for Tourism
It is a well-known fact that tourism
can be a deadly foe as much as a firm
friend in the matter of development.
Considering the economic might of
the tourism industry, careful
attention should be paid to this
many-sided phenomenon with its
global repercussions.
According to UNESCO, the
impact of tourism is such that
progressives strategies are vitally
needed in order to prepare the
ground for genuinely progressive
international, regional and local
strategies.
We should and must be
always remember that, the
falsification of authenticity
in favor of tourism is a
very serious issue.
Product Developing
When we travel we look for pasalubong
or souvenir.
When we visiting a place, we do not know
what really in their place unless we see it
for ourselves.
Do a cultural mapping or inventory that
will serve as a jump off point for a
heritage tourism program.
Be proud of what you have.
Architect Augusto Villalon
said: The best way to feel good
about what we have is to know
what we’ve got. So try visiting
as much of the Philippines
and come to an epiphany on
Pinoy greatness.
Protect and preserve the natural and
cultural heritage of the place.
Conserve and protect the living culture of
the place: (1) experiencing different
cultures, visiting natural and cultural
heritage are the reasons most tourists
travel. (2) put safeguards in place such as
local ordinances and policies. (3)
safeguard the local authenticity.
Involve all stakeholders to ensure
sustainability and success of programs.
(1) stakeholders must understand the
value and rationale behind the program.
(2) ask stakeholders what they want or
how they feel about the plan. (3) people
who are left out will not feel good about
the project. (4) ensure that income is
distributed fairly among all communities
involved in cultural tourism.
